Aliso
During Roman times, Haltern am See was one of the most important camps in Germania on the right bank of the Rhine. It was the logistical hub for all activities and military operations in Germania. The river Lippe played an important role as transport route. It connected Haltern am See not only with the "metropolis" Xanten, but also with the Rhine and the eastern camp "Anreppen". Up to 5.000 soldiers were stationed in what is now Haltern am See. This included the fateful 9th legion, which was beaten during the legendary Varus Battle - a turning point in the history of Europe.
In the LWL Roman Museum artefacts from Roman camps along the river Lippe are displayed. More than 1.200 exhibits bear witness to the highly developed culture and technology of the Romans - their incredible achievements in construction and logistics, their craftsmanship and insights into life far from home.
The rebuilt Aliso fortifications are just as impressive in their depiction of Roman life 2.000 years ago at exactly this site. On weekends volunteers reenact scenes from everyday life and train for battle in authentic and lovingly crafted gear. Well worth visiting!
