Buzkashi is the national sport of Afghanistan. The event regularly draws hundreds of spectators during autumn and spring. Teams of sometimes more than 100 horsemen compete in dragging a beheaded calf into a chalkcircle on the playing field. Serious injuries to both participants and bystanders are not uncommon in this archaic game. Stakes are high and victorious competitors are celebrated as national heroes.
